The Civil Department of
the 33rd District Court is responsible for handling non-criminal and non-traffic
matters,
such as landlord/tenant disputes, small claims cases, and general civil cases
where one party is seeking money damages from another, which cannot exceed
$25,000.
If the court decides in your favor in any civil matter, it does not automatically
mean that the defendant will pay the judgment and costs. You may have to take
additional legal steps (ie. garnishment, execution, etc...) to obtain your
money, and in the end, success in collecting may depend upon whether the other
party
has the money to pay you.
If you have received a ticket from an officer, the Civil Department will not be able to assist you. Tickets are handled by the Criminal / Traffic Department.
